Freiwillige Feuerwehr Lauffen am Neckar / DE
The new building for the Voluntary Fire Brigade of the city of Lauffen am Neckar results from the success of the office Bernd Zimmermann Architekten in a competition of 2000. Formerly the Brigade was housed in very cramped quarters in the old part of the city, now the spacious new building was constructed in the immediate vicinity of the train station, in the flood plains of the River Zaber. The architects met with a highly heterogeneous environment and they reacted to it with an ensemble of main building, drill tower and yard. Due to the threat of flooding of the site, the new building was placed above the centennial high-water mark, banks make up for the difference in height compared to the existing terrain. In the yard stands the drill tower, an open concrete construction consisting of round slaps linked by stairs and landings which is an impressive landmark. The main building of the fire station consists of a cube with technical equipment for fire-fighting and an inset wing for events and the administration. The two parts also differ in their material – brick and concrete. Through a two-storey foyer, the levels are vertically accessed, and horizontally via central hallways. In the unostentatious hall, which can be looked into out of a band of windows from the multi-function room on the upper floor, there is room for ten vehicles. A roof garden which – minimally equipped – serves as a place for relaxing adjoins the multi-function room. The centre of operations looks like an inserted glass structure and sits on the corner of the building which is turned towards the city. The materials create a harmonious atmosphere whereby red was deliberately not used so that the green tiles, the linoleum and the partly green window glass create a complementary contrast to the red of the fire engines.
