Institutsgebäude für Industriedesign Halle / DE

Education

In the context of the architectural restructuring of the Burg
Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, in
2007 the new building for the Department of Industrial
Design was completed. On the campus near the Neumarkt,
within walking distance to the Saale River, the Berlin architectural
office Anderhalten Architekten converted a laboratory
building from the fifties and expanded it by an annex:
the architects added another storey to the simple plaster
building – at the time itself an expansion of the adjacent
Art Nouveau villa – and supplemented it with a three-storey
wing. On a useable surface of 2,500 square metres, the
students and the teachers now have a lecture theatre with
150 seats, spacious studios, offices as well as the necessary
secondary rooms. The most striking feature of the
new building, however, is its façade: the gold-coloured,
three-dimensional structure is the eye-catcher of the institute and, at the same time, takes up the topics of industrial
design and industrial production. The characteristic plasticity
of the façade is due to the staggered arrangement of
three different formats and the differentiated angles of the
gold-anodised aluminium coffers. The window apertures
are integrated into the horizontal structure as gaps. The
main entrance from the newly created square between the
new building and the existing building in the eastern part
of the site was also inserted into the golden structure. The
students enter the institute through a porch: here, along
the conserved, former exterior façade, runs the main staircase
connecting the different levels. As does the outside
appearance, the interior as well is determined by the exterior
façade: the arrangement of the windows creates
extraordinary spatial moods and frames the view of the
surrounding landscape.
